Well, it's finally in store - the latest edition of Complete Wedding Melbourne!

I shot a feature back in August for the lovely Erin of Brides on Main in Mordialloc as part of a collaborative project with her lovely dressmaker, and her lovely model, herself a Wedding Co-Ordinator ( a breastfeeding mama of two .. and NOT, may I add, a professional model. Amazing ).

We had a lovely little afternoon shooting in and around the store.
We chatted while Erin transformed Sarah from suburban mum to Va-Va-Voom, Arlene did the dressing, and then it was my turn. I must say, it was lovely to work with a client I could direct and instruct and they knew what I wanted and didn't pout or run away ( or ignore me completely! - lol, the joys of photographing the kiddy set! :) There was also none of the stress or angst of a real wedding .. just some ladies all wanting to make some beautiful images together.

Great work girls .. a virtual hi-five to you all .. the mag looks fabulous - x.

It wasn't that long ago I was invited to photograph baby #2 it seems, and it's always lovely to be invited back .. this time for some updated family pics to celebrate a new family member ..

I love the shot above where poor Dad is doing up shoelaces and the kids are using him as a track for their cars to drive on... so reminds me of my place .. just a vessel .. to be used at the will of children ... heh ...

They live in a fabulous part of town with the most awesome "boardwalk". Last time I visited we did indoor images, but this time I said "we just *have* to use your "front yard" .. isn't it fabulous? I could so live here..

Ah, brothers, so sweet .. with two of my own, I do have a soft spot for all their funny grossness .. they make me laugh :)

The Very Cute & Funny B- Family | Melbourne Family Photographer

Recently, the B-family were referred to me to capture images of their 11-day-new baby addition to the family.

I think Mum will be surprised to see this first image. Miss G did close her eyes... maybe just once, but we got it!

Perhaps it had something to do with being a thirdborn .. I swear I think she relaxed once the siblings arrived, with all their love and mirth..

Funny little kids .. they had me in stitches with their modelling and posing and face-pulling .. way too many photos .. how cute are they?

I love the families I get to see. Maybe it's because families that love each other want to be photographed together?
I'm not sure, but gee I meet some lovely people.

A little while ago now, I met up with the lovely H family in a park not far from their home. We had some fun in the red wagon and just running around, feeding ducks and playing What's the Time Mr Wolf?

I love meeting families in new places special to them - I love the variety and discovering new places. I capture families in their homes, in their backyards, at their local park. Alternatively, many people look to me to suggest locations, and that's fine too. If you're in Melbourne, whatever your personal taste and family style, we can do it! ;)

I was delighted to recently be asked to be official photographer for this local Primary School Fashion Parade .. I had been the previous year as a guest, and had such a fun night out!

Champers! Clothes! It's all a little bit fancy..

How fabulous are the outfits? The girls all looked divine.

Brides On Main :: Melbourne Commercial Photographer

Recently I went to visit Erin in her newly opened store in Mordialloc: Brides on Main.
Erin was needing images to help complete her new website that was co-inciding with the gala opening.

Oh my goodness - the best word to describe this gorgeous store: Luxe

I just loved those huge mirrors, the opulent black and silver theme offsetting the gorgeous white and cream gowns, and chandelier lighting.

A Louis Ghost Armchair in the makeup area ( Erin is a qualified Makeup artist and hair stylist - this really is a one-stop shop! ) is watched over by a beautiful canvas divider featuring the image of Marilyn Monroe - and adds to the moviestar decadence of the surrounds.

Out in the main area there are more comfortable velvet Louis armchairs for guests, and a fabulous faux Zebra-patterned pouf to add a little modern tzing! ( the Zebra pattern is mirrored in little cushions on the Louis armchairs too! )

I was not the only one impressed with the new store .. passerbys popped in, eyes sparkling as they took it all in, or pointed and oohéd from the window outside.

It really is a gorgeous store, and Erin is a lovely hostess. If you're in the area and looking to get married, or even if you're after some hair and makeup for an important event, why not pop in and say hi.

Who's That Girl? { Melbourne Corporate Photography }

I've been doing a fair bit of corporate work at the moment ( in part thanks to my new friends at Webby Web Design ) and as well as the more serious suits in offices, I had the chance to meet the lovely Koren recently for something a bit more relaxed.

Koren is a Civil Celebrant who loves to unite people in love.

On our way to somewhere else, we just happened to park in a random street that featured interesting, varied and spectacular backdrops everywhere.

Lovely to boot, meeting Koren felt less shoot and more catching up with a girlfriend. I think her images reflect the kind of person she is, and her warmth and professionalism as a Celebrant.

The sort of person you'd want at your wedding. In an official capacity ( although I bet she'd be a fun guest too! )

Goodness I love this age!

Just on 6 months old and what a cutie!

Baby C's mummy had images taken of her little boy at the same age and wanted the same for her little girl.

Such a smoochable, squishable age ... and this was the first time baby C had sat up!
Mum was amazed and thrilled .. but look at her cheeky face .. I think she'd been practising in secret ! ;)

I didn't think so.

Little R had just turned one when I visited for a little play at his local park.

I brought along the little red aeroplane by request and oh boy, was he happy. Ever the champ though, he didn't kick up a fuss at all when it was time to go home.

Such a gorgeous age to photograph, I can't ever imagine this little man ever being unhappy - that infectious grin had me smiling all the way home!

It's been a busy old time over here at h&b foto.grafic lately.

So much so that I have left the archiving of 2010 so late and my computer is groaning under the weight. Time to put those hard-drives in offsite storage!

I loved meeting Baby C .. he reminded me so much of my own babies - an old soul.
Quiet, unfussed, but knowing what he likes, what he wants, what he doesn't ( scroll down to the last photos - what a crack up, we all had a good laugh at his expense, poor bebe ;)

And as predicted, his parents just roll with it, roll with him. So relaxed, I love that. I knew they would be breezy when I did their maternity photos.

Recently I had the pleasure of documenting a big family reunion, organised in secret, to celebrate the 70th birthday of the family patriarch.

The children and grandchildren all flew in from all over Australia for this fantastic surprise, and despite a week of not-so-fantastic weather and much fingernail-nibbling from me ( just what will I do with 16 people if it rains, with a tight window of opportunity, and near their home so they can make their restaurant booking?? )

Luckily, the Sun Gods did shine, and it was glorious..

I had such a good time with this gorgeous family, the time just flew by.
It was the first lovely night in Melbourne in a little while and the Gardens were packed with happy families picnicing and enjoying the balmy afternoon...

And this family were no exception .. lots of fun, lots of love, and hiding it from no-one. I love that, watching families interact, seeing children being delighted in, and basking in the knowledge that they are adored.

A recent session with a gorgeous new family.

Baby A arrived into this world a little bigger than expected, a healthy 10pounder and all of him 100% adorable.
His parents had to go out and buy some Double-0 clothing for him to go home from hospital in - all the items they'd brought with them were too small!

( Which makes me wonder what they dressed his 14-pound Granddad in all those years ago!! )

And the Weather was Amazing: Melbourne Family Photographer

I don't normally do 'sneak peeks' .. in fact, often my sessions are blogged months after the images are selected and the prints are up on the wall.

But this session just made me smile, and smile & smile!
You see, last Sunday, Melbourne was hit with a SEVERE WEATHER WARNING. I went outside and put the guinea pigs away, secured some toys that might be blown away and reluctantly went inside to call the client and cancel. It was hard to beleive, but in 2hours, we were going to need an Ark and two of every animal.

An hour passed. The BOM website showed a storm front a bit like the map of New Zealand, and my little pocket of the world was between the islands of fury .. untouched. An oasis. What should I do? Should I call back, foolishly and suggest we might be ok? What if the kids were now bathed and getting ready for bed?

I called. I left the ball in their court. We waited.
And decided to do it.

Well.

The light was *amazing* and we had so much fun! At one stgage some big blotchy heavy drops began to fall and I raced the kids up to get some quick headshots for mum.. but even that passed, and we resumed play again. the water was as warm as a bath and no-one was there - we had the beach to ourselves ( normally I fight for space with brides and videographers and wedding parties )

Kerrin, thankyou for calling me back - i'm so glad we didn't reschedule. Your family is such fun and I think these images reflect it, I can't wait to get onto the rest and get the whole gallery to you - just beautiful!

Milestone Press: Melbourne Product Photographer

A taste of some recent product photography I did recently for Milestone Press.

Milestone Press is an Australian Owned & Operated Company, and i've been using their product for 3 years now.. and giving away the PR for free!
I really do like to stand behind the products I love, and hey, all those years as a Sales Rep .. sometimes I can't help myself... I love to sell the things I love, commission or no commission ;)

So I was delighted this year when they came to me looking for some new images. It seems Milestone Press like to reward those that support them also.

This year my Master Plan Diary is in Cornflower Blue, which is divine. Last year was Berry, and the year before it was a Poppy Red.
I love an old fashioned diary, all my notes, scribbles and con-note numbers, contacts, phone numbers I thought i'd ever only need the once ... they're there when I need them, and i'm surprised how often I do. Handy.

Anyway, this was some straightforward clean & clear photography, which is necessary for consumers - to see the details, the colours, the materials. I'm hoping we'll also do some more conceptual work together later in the year as well, which will be exciting.

A couple of weeks back, when Melbourne weather was at her worst and we were supposed to be enjoying warm balmy Spring days, a Queensland Family decended to enjoy all sights, scenes and smells the city had to offer.

Personally, I was pleased to get away from the beach and go somewhere distinctly non-Queensland .. more urban, more oldtown, more history, more Melbourne.

To capture a piece of their holiday to take home with them.

Meeting up was even more special as I have 'known' this family for 4years now - their trials & tribulations, fears and accomplishments. ( And we got to go out for Vietnamese later - yummy, yum-yum! )

Thankyou Tracey - it was lovely to catch up, and meet your lovely family.

My latest studio sample arrived last week - an awesome 60x40" colour canvas to go in the freshly painted studio ( compliments of my super-handy-hubby )

To celebrate this unveiling, i'd like to offer a special discount on studio shoots for the months of September and October - keep reading to find out more!:

Studio Photography is best suited to maternity, newborn and baby photos. The room is climate controlled ( toasty in Winter, cool in Summer ) and I have lots of lovely props, and backdrops to help set the scene ( these are carefully washed and stored after each session )

Backup lighting is handy on days like today when it's a bit murky and overcast, but mainly I control and filter the natural light streaming in from studio left. You can be ensured that even on the darkest day the light will be perfect.

Depending on the 'look' you're after, I take time and effort to make separate vignettes - small areas of difference to aid in different looks. In these photos, you can see some bunting has been left up from a recent baby session, and the fleur-pom-poms are always popular, either as a prop, or a hanging crinkly distraction to get baby to look up. A corner with fake baroque wallpaper might be set up as a backdrop to a sleeping baby.

Of course, plain black & white backdrops are ever-popular too, the session is yours to control and match with your personality.

This room is adjacent to my reception room, where you may view products, discuss your session, or simply relax. If I forget to offer you a tea or coffee though, please ask - I am *terrible* at this, and usually remember after you've left!!

I'd love to have you come and view my new canvas in person - the quality is superb. I only use the very best in suppliers, and I am very very fussy. I also supply prints, art blocks, albums and other items I will be showcasing in a separate blogpost soon.

I received a lovely email in my inbox the other day.

I felt a little bad.
I met this wee gorgeous princess as part of my photographer's weekend LAST OCTOBER where she acted as a very gorgeous little model for us.

When the mother received her proofs recently ( see, i'm not the only slowboat then! :), she told me she was disappointed that mine was not among them as she'd seen this particular image I had taken:

What a lovely thing to say!
I must admit, I hadn't even looked at my pics from that weekend but for a few - things got very busy and commissioned work threw me in a tizz.

However, the upside of this is that revisiting these photos and finally editing them has been *lovely* and i'm sure you'd agree this little girl is gorgeous.

Mookah! :: Inverloch Product Photographer ::

More pics from my lovely Inverloch day-jaunt, this time product photography for the lovely girls at Mookah.

Depite the winter BOG ( oh, it was wet, I had to oil my boots for weeks until I got the high-tide marks out of them! ), Mookah headquarters is on the loveliest parcel of land just out of town. Every turn is a beautiful new vista to marvel at - old sheds, rusting things, trees of green and blue, just gorgeous. Oh, and the headquarters themselves? Well, let's just say that in my dreams, I own a dozen different houses in a dozen different locations, and this could be one of them - open fireplace, cathedral ceilings, arty light installations, picture windows, a deck to die for ... well..

So it was a little difficult considering the wet and the bog and considering we were working with soft furnishings best NOT associated with mud, dirt and water. But we did our best.

I've bought from Mookah before and if you're in the market for gorgeous Australian made product featuring Australian motifs and produced from Australian-made fabrics, then you couldn't look any further for fabulous.

Mother's Day Part II: Melbourne/Inverloch Family Photographer

This session was taken in 2-parts, my first reshoot ever!

I just wasn't happy with the pics of the girls the first time around ( these wee lasses are only 4, 3 and 9months old, and after a long trip from the country at a time probably past their dinner, sitting and smiling for the camera probably wasn't what they really wanted to do )

Not that they weren't delightful and funny and cute ( they had all that in spades! ), but since a trip to their neck of the woods was on the cards anyway, I suggested I come to them, to get the girls together.

I'm glad I did.

Have you ever been to Inverloch?

OMG.

I would be back in a heartbeat.

In fact, it was a little bit naughty of me, but it's one of those places i've been 'meaning to check out' since I moved to Melbourne at age 21. That's *muffled* 20years ago now *ahem*, so sometimes an excuse is needed, and I was glad to come down and capture these beautiful girls on their home turf.

Plus I think they got a little bit more gorgeous in those few weeks as we organised it. And the baby *never* stops smiling, not ever.

On Mother's Day this year, two sisters arranged to drive their families up from the country to see me. Such a long drive for a quick play on the beach, but the kids took it all in their stride and had a great time.

I originally photographed Sweet baby S in her mummy's tummy, and I hope to be seeing/photographing much more of her in future .. those eyes!

This was a very gentle session. When a baby isn't sleeping very well and you know Mummy is tired, you don't want to muck around primping and posing .. you just get in there and quietly and inobtrusively, and try to capture a moment, a memory in time.

I think she's beautiful, and you'd never know what a tummyache she had, poor sweetie.

Recently I had the opportunity to photograph this lovely, lovely family in their beautiful home. It was so much fun and the kids were stars. I had them jumping, stacking, bubbling, and just when it was time to wrap up for dinner and the little one was so tired ( they'd hosted a birthday party earlier in the day! ) .. we had a bit of a pillow fight to boot.

Hello all!

Well, i'm a little surprised to be here, but today I am 40 ... that seems so old.

The other night I went to a Spandau Ballet/ Tears for Fears Concert ( which, I notice, when I tell people this, I hide my mouth behind my hand, in an embarrassed little gesture ), but we did have a good time, and I didn't even know I *liked* Tears for Fears .. i'm pretty sure I thought they were pretty naff at the time .. but there I was, singing along, having a ball.

Reminds me of a few years ago ( ok, about 10 ) when Bon Jovi were in town and a girlfriend and I got free tix .. oh the eye-roll! oh, the teasing I gave her, a fan. And then, they got on stage .. and I knew every song - I was a Cowboy, a Loaded Six-String on my back..

I don't bag Bon Jovi any more.
They put on a pretty mean concert.

To date in this new year, I have been running off my 2009 prices.

After placing some canvas orders today I realise the world has moved, and I have not moved with it. My canvases are very popular, and I keep my pricepoint fair. However, my low margins have not allowed for any pricing increases from my suppliers.

Therefore, as of March 1st, 2010, my Canvas pricing will be increasing to reflect this.
I will also be increasing the pricing on my storyboards.

Custom Photography is "something special"

Custom photography is more of a luxury than your shopping-centre chain experience.
Custom photography truly is not for everyone, it requires a level of commitment, investment in time and money, forethought and planning on the part of the subject/client and requires a larger time commitment for the photographer as well.

Clients who enjoy taking a more active role in the creation of their families’ memories have the desire to have portrait art that is truly personalised.

Many clients opt for it to be a once a year special experience, some opt to have custom photography sessions done to record their child's stages in life. Having said this, it is clear that custom photography is not in everyone’s budget, it is something that most families save for to splurge on from time to time to memorialize their children as they really are ( as opposed to being posed and primped in the cookie cutter studio setting).

There is a great deal of time involved in creating custom photography sessions for a client. The luxury of great service, better choices and a superb end product. The time invested at the session is only a small portion of time involved in this process.

Custom photography has been likened to purchasing a motor vehicle:
To get from point A to B, you *could* take the bus, you *might* get a seat, and maybe you won't arrive at your destination bathed in sweat, and with some unidentifiable goo on your shoe..

OR: you could luxuriate in a climate controlled setting, in comfortable individual seats and listening to the music of your choice.
In Australia, nobody really wants to take the bus, the train, the tram. They want the smooth easy experience of a motor car.
Personalised, individual, tailored.

Custom photography is much the same cup of tea. It is where the intangibles make the experience truly wonderful and the images themselves make the investment of money and time truly worthwhile.

Custom photography can be broken down into even more levels. There are on location, studio, mixed studio/on location, specialty location and destination type photographers.
The beauty of custom photography is in the choices and in the luxury of those options.

The knowledge that your final images are the result of someone caring about those moments so much that they take extra time ensuring that the artwork you receive is good enough to stand by with their name on it. What Is Custom Photography

The photographic art you choose to place on your wall is ultimately the result of the vision of the photographer. This vision, coupled with what you wear to your session, the environment, the lighting, even the mood the subjects are in at the time of photographing creates the work that you will want to proudly display on your walls forevermore.

Your first step in the process is more about determining who you are, who your family is and then seeking a photographer that reflects your style.

For instance let’s say your family is extremely outdoorsy and loves playing on the beach. You start determining what style you like, browse through photography website portfolios and determine if any of the styles exhibited there would be a good fit with your life and family style.
You have already determined that you should probably seek out a beach type photographer (that is if you live near a beach) and then begin narrowing the field down a bit.

Finally after a bit of internet research, you have narrowed it down to two photographers who do what seems like solid work, the sort of outdoor beach look you desire. It is now time to ask yourself: Do you like photographer A’s style over photographer B’s style, or vice-versa?

What custom photography ultimately is all about is choice and experience.
Custom photography is about finding someone who will photograph your family, give you devoted 1:1 attention without worry of who is next ‘in line’ or the impersonal feeling of a crowded portrait studio.

A custom photography experience should have you, the client and your experience in mind.

Once I went to a conference in San Francisco and won a keyring for travelling the furthest to be there.

I think I owe Baby L. a keyring.
She travelled from Abu Dhabi.

I won't flatter myself though, as it really wasn't me she was in Australia to see .. she was meeting her Grandparents for the first time - aww.

Have been a little under-the-weather with a bit of a headcold and a loss of voice ( very hard to communicate! ) but I hope to be back on board soon!

For those of you who have recently had sittings, just a reminder my regular editing time of 2 weeks has been extended to 3 due to the crazy amount of work I have due for Christmas orders, and other things I won't bore you all with right now.

Really - I don't know how other photograhers do it - photoshoots, editing, publishing to websites, galleries, updating blogs, tweeting, plus keeping house and getting family time with their own ?

But still, it's all good, and being early days, setting up is the hardest part. Each obstacle you overcome makes the road just a wee bit smoother next time.

So yes, i've been continuing to get work, but I just haven't been here posting the results - not that this blog has been launched anyway ( hello me, I am effectively talking to myself ! ), so I am hardly letting anybody down ! :D

This is my gorgeous 18mo old asleep last night. I would die for those eyelashes !

Anyway - so on the home front .. i've purchased a Website and have been slowly chipping away at that .. hired a clever talented graphic designer girlfriend to work on a new logo for me .. have booked in a photographer's retreat for more hands-on learning, in Canberra, later in the year.

I've been photographing and marketing and promoting away. Participated and donated my services to a community auction recently, and am juggling away madly, but happily.

Oh yes, delays on this site are all good :D
